Day 14: Pikes Peak Attempt and Garden of the Gods

Currently in: Moab, UT

Like I said, we woke up at 5:30 and were on the road by 6am.  Bye Santa Fe!  Pikes Peak, CO here we come!  We had at least a 5 hour drive ahead of us so we were happy to leave early.  I dozed for a few hours in the car until Jeremy found a breakfast place we could stop at.  Russell’s Truck Stop was our only choice.  We then hit the road for another 3 hours and arrived at our campground called South Meadow in Pike National Forest.

The weather was being really weird.  It was sunny, then cloudy, then raining, then sunny in this rotation every 20 minutes or so.  The campground was simple but EMPTY, which was awesome. Very quiet and relaxing.

We set up camp and then headed to the Garden of the Gods.

It was amazing to see on this dreary day so I can’t even imagine what it looks like when it is nice out.  We drove, climbed some rocks and hiked around for a couple of hours .

It was nice that the dogs were welcome to come too, which is certainly not the case everywhere.  It was also really bike friendly and I thought it would be so fun to ride your bike through the park.  Next time!

We had planned on driving up Pikes Peak but I made the mistake of describing the road that we would be driving on to Jeremy and that made it a no go.  Ohhhh well.

On our way back we passed Red Rock Canyon park and figured we would hike around there for a little bit before the weather turned bad again.  I’m glad we did because you were allowed to have your dog off leash so Chester got to trot around.  He’s so funny – he is Jeremy’s little shadow.  It started drizzling again so we stopped at Walmart to pick up some food for the week and went back to make dinner.  It REALLY started raining after we ate and we were exhausted from no sleep anyway so we spent the evening reading and relaxing with the pups in the tent.

I finished reading two books: The Second Chance Dog by Jon Katz (so good and so sweet - must read if you love dogs)

and The Liars Club by Mary Karr (it's part of a 3 part memoir... gritty but interesting.  Heavy but a
good read too!)
