Day 11: Amarillo and Santa Fe aka The Day that would Never End

We left OKC and weren’t sure if we were going to do a short drive to Amarillo where we had reservations for the night or if we would keep going to get an extra day in Santa Fe.

Along our way to Amarillo we stopped on Route 66 to check out the iconic Conoco station.

It's Mater!

It’s been in a ton of movies and is well known to people for the movie Cars.

We took a bunch of pictures and checked out the souvenir shop.  They had a lot of cool stuff in there and the workers in the shop were super helpful.

Our next stop along the route was a surprise for Jeremy.  He had noticed during the packing process that I had brought 3 cans of spray paint that may have been used to create an award winning cowboy robot.  BUT I wouldn’t tell him why!  Muahahahaha!  It was killing him J Then we finally arrived at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX.

There are like 5 or 6 Cadillacs buried in the ground and people come and spray paint whatever they want on them.  SO COOL.

The only not cool part was that it was REALLY muddy by the cars so you had to go in barefoot or kiss your shoes goodbye.

We opted barefoot.

Jeremy spray painted a ton of different things, he couldn’t get enough.

The 3 C's: Cole, Callie & Chester

I, on the other hand, could not spray paint for the life of me lol Jeremy thinks it was the can I was using but I’m not 100% sure.

But I was REALLY good at coloring in shapes!  Haha! Those are Chester's eyes that Jeremy made.

Afterwards there was a major cleaning process and we headed out in search of some lunch.  Amarillo had a ton of options but that was backtracking a little and we wanted to keep moving because we still had 4-5 hours left to get to Santa Fe.  We went back on route 66 and ended up stopping at a tiny Mexican Café called Roosters.

It was delicious and we had a little picnic table out front where we could eat with the dogs.  I got veggie tacos and Jeremy got a crazy green chile burrito.  The guac and chips were delish.  Then we were back on the road for the last leg to Santa Fe.

Our first gas stop was to get gas and some Chester’s Chicken that we had seen all over the south in gas stations.  Obviously we had to try some.  It was good!  For gas station chicken… Then we continued on.

We stopped again for some gas in Santa Rosa, NM which was supposed to be our last stop along the way.  Well… that was not in the cards… Callie hopped out of the back of the car when my back was turned and got left behind as we continued to Santa Fe.  Full, horrifying, dramatic, panic stricken post next time.

Long story short, we drive another 1.5 hours to Santa Fe, check into the hotel, Jeremy opens the back of the car and there is only one dog.  He walks calmly up the stairs and says to me, “Jen, Callie isn’t in the car” and I’m like “What?  Where is she then?  How could she not be there.  She was there when we left the gas station.”  After calling a million people, we find out Callie IS at the last gas station at Santa Rosa and we have to drive the 1.5 hours back.  Luckily she is still there when we arrive but then we have to drive BACK to Santa Fe again.  Man, that was a terrible few hours.  Like I said, full recap of Operation Rescue Callie next time.

Then we finally got to rest after 17 hours on the road... after giving all of the dogs a million kisses.   The End.
